Mr Jowett’s Blog: Preparing pupils for their next stages

Posted on: February 23rd 2018

At this time of year, as we finalise school places for our current Form 6 and look to the next cohort of children, we spend a lot of time reflecting on how we prepare children for the next stage of their education and how this aligns with what senior schools are looking for. Keeping up to date with these expectations is something we do continuously. As Head, I regularly visit many of the schools we feed into, in order to learn about each school so I can help guide parents to find the right school for their child. The school offers they receive are an indication to their performance in exams and feedback from Headteachers in senior schools is overwhelmingly positive. They explain that our children perform exceptionally well in interviews; they are confident, articulate and collaborate well with others. I continually hear the phrase “You send us lovely children!”

To help children prepare is a process that begins early on. Last week during our school reflection, guided by our ISI Self Evaluation Form (SEF), it was so clear that the opportunities the children receive from the very youngest in the Nursery to those in Form 6, all contribute to nurturing children who are ready to face the challenges of the 11+ process. Through the promotion of our core values, challenge and rigor in the curriculum and the wide range of extra-curricular activities on offer, children develop confidence, ambition and resilience whilst remaining humble, kind and reflective. Just over this half term our fantastic teachers, over and above normal lessons and clubs, have planned at least 11 sporting fixtures and tournaments, two music festivals, five year group trips, one chess tournament, Book Week and the Senior Prep Production - all in five weeks! The character children develop through these experiences is what shines through at interview and our gratitude must go towards each and every staff member who work incredibly hard to make all of this happen.

We look forward to an action-packed half term and hope that we will see many of you at the upcoming events.
