Reception class have been working very hard on their current topic ‘Cultural Festivals’. At the beginning of the half term, children learnt about Halloween and the ways in which people celebrate this festival. The children wrote about Halloween parties they had been to and whether they were going trick-or-treating on Halloween night.

Afterwards the children learned about the story of Guy Fawkes, which they were really excited about. They acted out the story in small groups and I was impressed with how they remembered specific details of the story. The children also learnt about the ways in which different families celebrate Bonfire Night and were particularly interested in making firework pictures and designing fireworks to be used in the future.

Last week, Reception learnt about Diwali, the Hindu Festival of Light. The children were fascinated by the story of Rama and Sita, especially the ten headed demon king, Ravenna. I am sure that you saw the excellent Rangoli patterns that the children decorated the courtyard with; they were very proud of their creations!

As this half term progresses, Reception will also be learning about the ways that Thanksgiving, Hanukkah and Christmas are celebrated.
