A Geography Trip to the High Street

Both Form 5 classes recently visited Muswell Hill Broadway in order to carry out fieldwork to support their Geography topic of “The High Street”. The children worked in groups to investigate parking, traffic and pedestrian usage and by the end of an hour, had gained an understanding of the difficulties of collecting accurate data, as well as relishing the chance to be outdoors and away from the classroom.

Over the years, the focus of their studies has broadened, from merely a consideration of whether the High Street should close to traffic, to include the changing nature of High Streets generally. The children have reflected on how the use of online shopping has grown, accelerated by lockdowns and home-working, and considered how the High Street might evolve in the future and whether it is still needed at all.

A second visit in November is already being eagerly anticipated, when the children will have the opportunity to interview members of the public, an activity that was unfortunately cancelled last year, due to the pandemic. We can't wait!
