The school council spent some time talking to the children in their classes, finding out ideas for charities that the children wanted to support. These were then brought to a school council meeting, where they had to present their class’ ideas and justify why we should support the charity.
There were a range of worthy charities put forward but after Oliver Osler put forward The Donald Woods Foundation, the decision was unanimous. Oliver spoke very passionately about the charity and why he feels it would be a worthy cause. Mrs Osler has seen first hand the important work that is being done and how the funds raised can be used. We intend getting speakers in to discuss with the children what their money is being spent on and the direct impact that they (and yourselves) are having on the less fortunate. We also hope to make links with a school that is supported by the foundation and possibly set up a pen pal program, so look out for more information on this in the new year.
The Donald Woods foundation is based in South Africa and their mission is to focus on the most alienated, least supported people living furthest from the road, clinic or utilities, empowering local residents and building foundations for real and lasting improvements in infrastructure, healthcare, education and skills development.
