Focusing on Outdoor Learning

As part of our drive to include more outdoor learning in the school curriculum, we are aiming to use both the school grounds and the local area more frequently to promote learning and well-being. With obesity rates rising and mental health issues in children becoming increasingly apparent, it is more important than ever for children to spend time in the natural environment. Shockingly, a 2016 report sponsored by Persil, found that British children “spend less time outdoors than prisoners”.

Studies have highlighted many benefits to spending time outdoors and engaging with nature. For example:

Pupils in Form 2 have already been using Coldfall Woods to support their work in Science and we would like to find opportunities to extend these visits to the local area across the whole school and in other subjects in the coming months. We also plan to utilise the outdoor space in the school grounds more extensively as well, in order to maximise opportunities for learning outdoors.

In order to facilitate this, please ensure that your child has a waterproof coat in school at all times.
