Form 3’s exciting adventures at the Roald Dahl Museum in Great Missendon
On Monday 14th March, Form 3 excitedly ventured to the small village of Great Missenden to explore the life and creations of Roald Dahl. The day started off with an introduction in Miss Honey’s classroom. The children were buzzing with excitement as they discussed Roald Dahl’s texts. We were then taken to the Story room where the children heard about the routine that Roald Dahl carried out each day. Did you know Roald Dahl went to his writing hut everyday and wrote for 4 hours?
The children were then split into 2 groups. The first group stayed in the Story room and were exposed to a range of activities to inspire writing, recording any inspiration in their very own ‘Story Idea’ books. The other group explored Boy Gallery and Solo Gallery. The groups then swapped activities.
In Boy Gallery, the children found out about Roald Dahl's childhood, his love of chocolate and his schoolboy pranks. They were able to dress up in Roald Dahl’s old school uniform, read his school reports and read letters that Roald Dahl wrote to his family members.
In Solo Gallery, the children were shown how Roald Dahl's real-life adventures led him to become a writer, working from a small hut in his garden. The children were shown a collection of quirky mementos collected by Roald Dahl; including his silver ball of Kit Kat wrappers, Roald Dahl’s false teeth and part of his femur (yes we are talking about his leg bone!).
We then finished the day at Roald Dahl’s Grave where we read this extract from ‘The Giraffe and the Pelly and Me’:
‘We have tears in our eyes
As we wave our goodbyes
We so loved being with you, we three.
So please now and then,
Come and see us again,
The Giraffe and the Pelly and me.
All you do is to look
At a page in this book
Because that’s where we always will be.
No book ever ends
When it’s full of your friends
The Giraffe and the Pelly and me.’
