On Friday 26th January, the Year 5s kicked off their Football season away at Dwight school. This was their first 7-a-side game and the flu really took a toll on the squad with four of our team unavailable. However every cloud has a silver lining, and this gave the opportunity for us to promote some deserving Year 4s up into the team.
The game started at a furious pace with some crunching tackles put in from our opposition. They were a very physically imposing team and it took us a while to realise that we would need to be really strong in the challenge if we were going to stand a chance. With Leonard visibly improving as the game went on, we were fairly solid in defense for the first half. Max H and Barnaby combined well down our right hand side and gave us some options with good balls into Michael. Unfortunately their defense was very solid and even with some trickery from Harry C and the Oscars (T and F) we we unable to breach their defense.
This was a great start to our Year 5 season and taught the players the importance of controlled physicality, positivity and cohesion as a team.
On Friday 19th we played Belmont school in a double header - Netball at Belmont and Football at Powerleague. For both teams these games were seen as trial games, so both schools rotated players and positions regularly. The Netball team had only had one session before the game, so it was a great opportunity to try players in different positions and roles. Mrs Smith and Miss Pattern were able to have a really good look at our team with a view to the ISA tournament in March and found the matches really informative.
The mixed Football format gave us an opportunity to coach and teach through the game, as well as providing a bit of an introduction to Belmont, who are hosting our end of season tournament in March. Emails will come out soon regarding both the ISA and the Belmont tournaments as we prepare to give a strong showing in both events.
