Form 6 has been undertaking a project on Financial Management. This involves each pupil picking an occupation and researching the salary for their relevant occupation. In addition to this, they will have to research mortgage rates and a property they can afford based upon their salary.
The project asks the children to work out the commission paid to the estate agent, the land survey costs as well as stamp duty. Each child has to calculate their gross pay; subtracting from that figure income tax and national insurance leaving them with a net pay figure which they turn into a monthly then a weekly amount. The children calculate their weekly outgoing expenses of council tax, energy bills and mortgage payments leaving the final figure as disposable income.
The reason for the overall project is to prepare the children for the financial situations they are taught as part of the secondary school, learning and managing money in later life.
