On Thursday 29th November, Form 4 went on a trip to The Royal Gunpowder Mills, where they learnt a lot about Victorian Christmas.
They learnt that Victorian Christmas trees were decorated with candy canes, popcorn and hand-made decorations and that wealthier families would decorate their trees with glass baubles. Before fairy lights were invented, the Victorians even adorned their trees with real candles!
The children enjoyed looking at rich and poor Victorian toys and learning about Victorian parlour games. They even played a few.
They had their lunch and visited the gift shop before learning about the first ever Christmas cards and making their own cards.
Finally, Form 4 learnt about the history of Christmas and the 12 days of Christmas. They were excited to learn that it is tradition to eat a mince pie on each of the 12 days to receive good luck and prosperity.
It was a fantastic day!
