On June 27th, Forms 5 and 6 travelled by bus and tube to City Hall, home of the Greater London Authority, to learn about its roles and responsibilities and the work of the Mayor, Boris Johnson.
After a warm welcome and introduction from our guide, Richard, the children had fun locating Norfolk House School, Buckingham Palace, Wimbledon and other places of interest (including many football clubs!) on a giant, sprawling floor map of the capital. This was followed by a trip to the top floor of the building, “London’s Living Room”, which provided stunning views of landmarks such as Canary Wharf, Monument, the Tower of London and the Shard.
Due to the children’s exemplary behaviour, they were then allowed the privilege of sitting at the conference table in the Assembly Room where the Mayor, last year, answered over 4000 questions. This time it was Richard’s turn to answer an impressive range of challenging questions from the Norfolk House pupils.
The morning concluded with a short presentation on the history of London and a quiz. On our return to school the pupils completed postcards, giving their ideas of what would make London a better place for children, for the Mayor’s consideration.
