Sports update - Haylee Howson

It is always lovely to hear about all the wonderful things that are going on in our school involving sport, particularly the enthusiasm displayed by our youngest children in Pre Prep. At Highgate woods, our Reception children have been working collaboratively to build a Gruffalo’s den and building rockets out of natural materials in order to develop their gross motor skills. They might even be building Sukkahs next week as they found out about the Jewish festival of Sukkot with Ms Habgood this week!

Whilst our youngest children are getting used to the routine of Wednesday and Friday sport, and our Form 1 pupils are definitely suring up on the ice in their Friday ice skating lessons,  our oldest children are wowing the teachers with their street dance skills. Peering into the playground at break, I see the Year 6’s practising their routines ready for the next street dance lesson. I can honestly say that I have never seen children street dance as well as the Norfolk House year 6’s- what talent we have inside our very own walls!

Having seen my first Form 2 gymnastics lesson, I was astounded by the energy and artistic creations I was seeing. The children carefully took to the beams to create movements using different parts of their bodies. They were also able to evaluate what they liked about other’s performances and provided each other with some very constructive yet positive feedback.

At Netball, the Senior Prep netball team have been busily preparing for our upcoming fixtures against Normanhurst and Salcombe. We have been particularly focusing on defending, leading for a ball and general attacking and defending strategies. As I glance over on the other court, the Form 2 and 3 Girls have been developing their passing and catching skills- and I must say, I can already see how much they have improved in just a few short weeks!

That’s all from me, see below for more fabulous sporting activities that are happening within our  active school!

Ice-Skating
What a great time we had ice-skating at Alexandra Palace rink last week! The children were whizzing around the ice ring having so much fun with their coaches. Some boys and girls were able to ice skate through the cones. It was quite funny watching Mrs Bolton ice skating like a pro while Mrs Jowett was holding onto the side and wobbling around trying to find her balance. We are looking forward to going ice skating every Friday. Mrs Jowett, Keep Practising!

Street Dance
It may look like something out of a music video, but infact it is our Year 6 children rehearsing their new routines in street dance. They have been exploring levels and rhythm whilst working in a partnership. Here are a few snapshots from last week’s street dance lesson.
